What is a cookie?

A  cookie  is a harmless text file that your browser stores when you visit almost any webpage. The purpose of this cookie is to allow the website to remember you whenever you visit that site again. Although, most people are not aware of this, cookies have been used for more than 20 years, ever since the emergence of World Wide Web.

What things AREN’T cookies?

A cookie is not a virus or a Trojan horse. It is neither a worm, nor spam or spyware. It doesn´t trigger pup-ups either.

What type of information do cookies store?

Normally, cookies don’t store information about you that is considered to be sensitive, such as credit cards or bank data, photographies, identity card numbers or personal data. The information stored is technical; it is related to personal preferences and the customization of content, etc.

The web server does not recognize you as a person; instead, it identifies your web browser. In fact, if you usually surf on a website using Internet Explorer and then you try to enter the same website by using Firefox or Chrome, you will notice that the web server won’t realize that you are the same person, because it is associating the browser, not the person.

  • Analytical/performance cookies: They collect information on the type of navigation that is being carried out, the most visited sections, checked out products, time zones, and language, etc.
  • Behavioral targeting Cookies: They display adverts based on your navigation history, your country, language, etc.

What are first-party and third-party cookies?
